<p>This book explores the opportunities and challenges faced by art-based social enterprises (ASEs) in engaging young people in education and training and supporting their pathways to employment.1 It also explores the dynamics and implications of 'enterprising' artistic practice for these and other social purposes. This study is thus set against the backdrop of what is termed the social turn in contemporary art, in which mainstream artistic practices have become more engaged with the lives of people and communities and with a spirit of collectivism aimed at addressing a range of issues from social exclusion to climate change. This social turn is not, in itself, new-and draws upon histories and traditions of collectivism in arts and cultural practices across the globe and histori- cally. What is new is the ways in which these more social and collective practices have infiltrated the more hierarchical and market-driven aspects of the contemporary art world. In addition, the study is set against the backdrop of rapid growth in social enterprise models across a range of sectors, including the creative industries. This is a growth spurred, in part, by increasing economic pragmatism in the state funding and delivery of welfare, cultural and community services. Finally, this study has taken place in the context of significant 'fourth industrial revolution' disruptions and transformations in the nature of work, a shift that has disproportionately affected young people globally in terms of their access to employment and education opportunities (Neufeind et al., 2018; Panth & Maclean, 2020).<br></p>

<p>It has widely been recognized that creativity plays an immense role not only for arts, sciences, and technology, but also for entrepreneurship, innovation, and thus, economic growth. We analyze the level and the determinants of self-employment in creative professions at the level of individuals. The analysis is based on the representative micro data of the German Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP). The findings suggest that people in creative professions appear more likely to be self- employed and that a high regional share of people in the creative class increases an individual's likelihood of being an entrepreneur. Investigating the determinants of entrepreneurship within the creative class as compared to non-creative professions reveals only some few differences.<br></p>

<p><br></p><p>Interestingly, the largest contribution of designers is to intervene in social problems trying to shape culture and environment of community as stated by the political scientist Herbert Simon that design is "changing existing situations into preferred ones". In this direction, when more focus is made on social, ethical and communal issues than on individual ones, values are more tangible, thus the shift from user centric design towards community centred design is achieved. Moreover, Manzini explains social innovation should interplay between autonomous initiatives that create social enterprises. These entities grow better in a favourable economic ecosystem, which is the national institutions' responsibility to provide. Besides when it comes to the design, designers are urged to prioritize recognizing existing social inventions and develop them into more effective, marketable, sustainable solutions. Therefore, branding and social media marketing strategy where taken into consideration in this research in order to create a lasting impact.</p>

Currently, Industry 4.0, which is also called a "smart industry", aims for the integration of cyber and physical systems to minimize waste and maximize productivity. Therefore, green technologies can be identified as key components in Industry 4.0. The scope of this Special Issue is to address how conventional green technologies can be a part of smart industries by minimizing waste, maximizing productivity, optimizing the supply chain, or by additive manufacturing (3D printing). This theme focuses on the scope and challenges of integrating current environmental technologies in future industries.</p><p>This Special Issue "Green Technologies: Bridging Conventional Practices and Industry 4.0" invites manuscripts from academicians working on green technology-related processes. <p>IN EXAMINING VARIOUS DEFINITIONS of the creative process, one is struck by certain assumptions that are common to most and by a basic disagreement which divides these definitions into two groups.1<br></p><p>The common assumptions are that products which are novel for a person or a culture and are considered valuable are "creative". The process that produces them is termed the "creative process" and is viewed as a distinct cognitive process, often involving distinct perceptual processes. A typical definition might be, then: "Creativity is that process which results in a novel work that is accepted as tenable or useful or satisfying by a group at some point in time” (Stein, 1963, p. 218).</p><p>Here, however, the agreement ends. The next step in some definitions is the proposition that creativity is a unique cognitive process, fundamentally different from all other forms of cognition, although it possesses certain similarities. Others propose instead that creativity is a special form of the cognitive process known as problem-solving, which, although it has certain distinct characteristics, is not essentially different from all other forms of "non-creative" problem-solving.</p><p>The first question that one must answer in order to proceed is whether these two positions are indeed, as they seem at first glance, irreconcilable. In order to resolve this we must discover if, in fact, they are describing the same process in the first place.</p>

<p><br></p><p>We are delighted to introduce this Special Issue of Sustainability, entitled "The Creative and Cultural Industries: Towards Sustainability and Recovery". During the last several decades, the creative and cultural industries (CCIs) have increasingly been recognized for their role in local, regional, national and supranational economies; as drivers of economic growth, development and regeneration; and for their social and cultural impacts on well- being, place making, inclusion, sustainability, diversity and culture. On the other hand, the COVID-19 crisis has exposed the fragility and precarity of an industry dominated by micro-businesses, freelance and informal work practices and few tangible assets, calling into question the sustainability of economic models based on a high level of precarity in employment practices. This has led to some efforts (undertaken by governments and public bodies) to protect this industry from the pandemic's impact. At the same time, lockdowns have also highlighted the importance of creative activity in maintaining individual well- being and community resilience and the innovative potential of this industry.</p><p>In this context, this Special Issue addresses the broader research field of CCIs and its various subsectors, as well as its role in developing pathways towards sustainability, resilience and recovery. The articles featured in this Special Issue offer unique insights, methodologies and empirical evidence that contribute to our understanding of the creative and cultural industries' multifaceted nature.</p>

<p>Food and nutrition security are prerequisites to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of poverty eradication (SDG 1), hunger eradication (SDG 2), good health and wellbeing (SDG 3), reduced inequalities (SDG 10), sustainable cities and communities (SDG 11), and responsible consumption and production (SDG 12). However, meeting these ambitious goals within the next 10 years, given the current global scenario, will be challenging. On one hand, the exponential growth of the world’s population, which is anticipated to reach about 10 billion in 2050, mainly living in cities and under diet transition, will necessarily result in a significant increase in food demand. On the other hand, climate change projections such as an increase in temperature and greenhouse gases, erratic rainfall patterns, and increased frequency of extreme weather events, accompanied by the reduction of arable land by as much as 50% in 2050, impose major food production challenges.</p>

<p>Non-climatic stressors (e.g., demographic and income growth, demand for animal products) and climate change (CC) influence the food system. These climatic and non-climatic stressors have an effect on the four pillars of food security (availability, access, use, and stability) [1]. From the beginning of the 1990s, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), showed that over the period from 1850 to 2012, the global average temperature had experienced warming of 0.78 ◦C. This global warmingcould be induced by the change in the carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration in the atmosphere from 278 ppm to 379 ppm. The prediction for the end of the 21st century is a global warming that will range between 1.5 ◦C and 2 ◦C [2]. In Africa, in recent decades, temperatures have increased at a rate somewhat faster than the global average temperature. Thus, the 2019 year was identified as one of the three warmest years on this continent [3]. CC is a consequence of global warming, which has adverse effects on fluctuations in annual total precipitations, average temperature, global increase in atmospheric CO2, and sea-level rise.</p>

<p>The COVID-19 pandemic has been yet another wake-up call for us to stop exceeding the planetary boundaries. After all, deforestation and biodiversity loss have been identifed as key processes in enabling the direct transmission of zoonotic infectious diseases. However, it is important to highlight that such a pandemic is not yet another global crisis, but rather one more consequence––like biodiversity loss or climate change––of the same fundamental problem––our economic system. This system is addicted to fossil resources and growth at all costs, and has failed to value our most important capital––nature.</p><p>Having arrived at the present tipping point, we clearly need a new economic paradigm that puts the basis for human prosperity within the planetary boundaries. How to transition towards this is the tricky part. Due to the speed and scale of change needed, the greatest economic transformation in human history is required in order to achieve a climate neutral, circular and inclusive economy that prospers in harmony with nature. This paradigm shift requires transformative policies, mission-oriented innovation and investments in bio-based solutions and natural capital, while business models and markets need to be rethought, as well as production and consumption cycles. Above all, we need to address the past failure of our economy to value nature because our health and well-being fundamentally depend on it.</p>

<p>It is anticipated that by 2050, we will have nine billion people to feed—how can we manage? That time 60% of people will be living in urban areas, and they will have higher demands for animal-derived proteins up to 60 kg of meat and 30 kg of fish. What comes to farmed animals for human consumption, there is a need for 7% annual increase in chicken and aquaculture to produce 60 billion chickens and 140 million tons of aquaculture products.</p><p>Other protein alternatives will be needed and could according to [1] come from (a) capturing more out of oceans (medusa, jellyfish, krill); (b) farming the sea (macro- and microalgae (spirulina—high-tech); (c) artificial proteins (Ap) but presently in vitro meat costs 120,000 USD/kg; (d) more out of agro-industry processing (Aip) by-products (corn gluten, brewers’ grains, yeasts, potato protein concentrate, distiller’s dried grain with soluble); (e) farming more plant protein sources (oil seeds, legumes, forages, trees (like Moringa leaves)); (f) compete for land, water, fertilizers, farm inputs; or (g) high-capital/high-tech (Aip, Ap, spirulina algae) potential (regional niche markets).</p>

<p>The agricultural sector increasingly relies on groundwater abstraction for irrigation in many regions of the world. Expansion of irrigated agriculture and groundwater use has contributed to increased food production and has improved food security. At the same time, the depletion of groundwater resources by excessive pumping has become a common challenge in key agricultural production areas across the world, threatening the sustainability of production. Over-pumping of aquifers causes ecological and environmental degradation of vegetation, wetlands, and streams and reduces the ability of aquifers to serve as a buffer for weather extremes induced by climate change. Unsustainable use of groundwater needs to be urgently addressed through sustainable rehabilitation and management strategies, in order to assure the availability of groundwater, today and for future generations. Recognizing the groundwater over-exploitation issue in the North China Plain, the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation and the Ministry of Water</p><p>Resources of the People’s Republic of China co-launched the project “Rehabilitation and management strategies of over-pumped aquifers in a changing climate” in 2014, in partnership with the China Geological Survey. The leading project implementation partner on the Chinese side was the General Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Planning Design (GIWP), while the leading project implementation partner on the Swiss side was the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zürich.<br></p>

<p>Agriculture is an essential industry that provides products for sustaining human life. Changes in agricultural systems have a profound impact on food security and environmental health. As one of the most densely populated regions in the world, East Asia has evolved into having a relatively stable mode of smallholder agriculture and homogeneous rural societies in the past forty centuries. However, subsistence smallholder agriculture has been abandoned due to the massive industrialization and urbanization in this region since the end of the 20th century.</p><p>A livelihood is a means of gaining a living and encompasses the capacity, assets, and activities required for achieving livelihood goals. The livelihood enterprises of rural households can generally be divided into agricultural production and off-farm employment, while farmers must carefully consider how to invest their resources into the two enterprises since they are extremely limited in time and capital. Thus, farmers’ attitudes and behaviors toward agricultural production essentially depend on their livelihood choices. As the carrier of agricultural production, the quantity and quality of land is another key factor that affects the form of agricultural systems. Therefore, the dynamic change in agricultural systems is essentially driven by rural livelihood transitions in the context of socioeconomic transformation, such as the introduction of smart farming, innovation of farm mechanization and reform of agricultural policy, while the process must be based on the state of land resources.</p>

<p>This chapter explores the social and ethical implications of scaling agricultural robotics. Despite the many promises offered by robots, a large number of social science studies have highlighted their potential to create winners and losers, which complicates the notion that their use will usher in a triumphant fourth agricultural revolution (see reviews by Klerkx et al., 2019; Fielke et al., 2020; also van der Burg et al., 2019). We use a responsible innovation framework to frame discussion of these debates (see e.g. Bronson, 2019; Eastwood et al., 2019; Rose and Chilvers, 2018; Regan, 2019). Responsible innovation contains four components (Stilgoe et al., 2013) – anticipation, inclusion, reflexivity, responsiveness – and methods for agriculture specifically have been outlined by Eastwood et al. (2019). We explore the social and ethical implications of agricultural robotics, and more importantly, what we can do to include and listen to a wide range of stakeholders when developing and scaling this technology.</p>

<p>Global agriculture is confronted by a number of substantial challenges, with some of them being existential. The principal challenge is climate change, which threatens desertification, with attendant increases in salinity, insect and animal infestations, and floods (as well as droughts). These impacts will remove some areas from cultivation at a time when the global population is projected to increase from 7.2 billion persons today to 9.7 billion persons in 2050. The agricultural sector in developing countries and less-developed countries is a source of employment and livelihood for the majority of the population, a major foreign exchange earner and supplier of raw materials to local industry, and has important potential for the economic development of those countries.</p><p>Significant sustainable agricultural innovation is required to deal with these challenges. Intellectual property rights (IPRs) may be of crucial importance for modern agriculture. They serve to make R&D in agriculture attractive by encouraging investment in new technologies and generating tradeable assets.</p>

<p>The aim of the volume is to identify the pathways of agricultural development in Asia and Africa. It evaluates whether Africa is following in Asia’s footprints. This volume has a resounding message that Africa is becoming the next Asia as it benefits from the earlier experience of Asia in agricultural and overall development. Africa has followed the Asian pathways: borrowed technology from abroad; did adaptive research in rice farming (modern seeds, fertilizer, and mechanical technologies); secured property rights on natural resources; adopted information and communication technologies (ICTs); invested in human capital, including training; and spread high-value revolution. Borrowed technology from abroad and adaptive research have jump-started the Asian-style Green Revolution in rice farming in favorable production environments in Africa and are expected to spread to other areas.</p><p>In Asia, the Green Revolution resulted in higher food production and lower food prices that led to deterioration in terms of trade of agriculture (i.e., the decline in the price of farm goods relative to nonfarm goods), leading to rapid structural transformation. The most striking feature of structural transformation is the secular decline in the share of agriculture and the corresponding increase in the combined share of industry and services, whether measured in terms of output or employment. Structural transformation in Asia has been the primary driver of the region’s rising income and geographic movement of capital and labor.</p>

The evolving COVID-19 pandemic has caused profound changes in the worldwide economic scenario, changing global consumers' priorities and expectations of positive influences exerted by business activities. In this vein, the epidemic crisis has acted as an accelerator for the transformation of companies towards value creation to meet sustainability requirements.<br></p><p>The pandemic has compelled all industries to become more sustainable, including the luxury industry. COVID-19 has indeed accelerated a transformational shift in the luxury industry to the 2030 United Nations Agenda in order to respond to the interests of the new generations who demand information on the social and environmental commitments of luxury brands. In fact, many luxury companies have been accused of being slow to address social and environmental issues and of having unsustainable behaviours (i.e., usage of nonreusable materials or endangered animals' skins, etc.). In particular, the luxury segments of fashion and textiles are considered the second-highest responsible for global carbon emissions just next to the oil industry. Luxury firms are being coerced by governments, non-governmental organizations, customers, and media into reducing the damage caused by the luxury supply chain. These aspects are compromising the value of luxury brands, and customers are beginning to boycott these brands. In addition, the scarcity of resources in the face of growing demand makes sustainable practices in the luxury industry a critical need.</p>

<p>This Special Issue of Arts investigates the use of digital methods in the study of art markets and their histories. As historical and contemporary data is rapidly becoming more available, and digital technologies are becoming integral to research in the humanities and social sciences, we sought to bring together contributions that reflect on the different strategies that art market scholars employ to navigate and negotiate digital techniques and resources. The essays in this issue cover a wide range of topics and research questions. Taken together, the essays offer a reflection on what takes to research art markets, which includes addressing difficult topics, such as the nature of the research questions and data available to us, and the conceptual aspects of art markets, in order to define and operationalize variables and to interpret visual and statistical patterns for scholarship. In our view, this discussion is enriched when also taking into account how to use shared or interoperable ontologies and vocabularies to define concepts and relationships that facilitate the use and exchange of linked (open) data for cultural heritage and historical research.<br></p>
